How to Design a Custom Memorial Boulder for a Loved One
Boulder Designs by TUSA Team
A memorial boulder is a natural, lasting way to honor someone you love. It can stand in a family cemetery, a church memorial garden, a backyard or the land where they spent their life. Designing one can feel overwhelming at a hard time, so this guide walks through each decision step by step. There's no need to rush.
Step 1: Decide Where It Will Go
Placement shapes everything else, including size, style and wording.
- Cemetery. Many cemeteries have rules on size, materials and bases. Ask for them before you start.
- Family land or home cemetery. More freedom, and often room for a larger stone.
- Memorial garden. A smaller stone paired with a bench or plantings. See memorial garden stones.
- Church grounds. Check with church leadership on placement and style.
Step 2: Choose the Size and Style
A natural boulder shape feels organic and peaceful. An upright headstone shape is more traditional. Companion stones honor couples side by side. Common sizes and starting prices, all including delivery and base:
- Single headstone, 30" x 26" x 5": $1,200 without a picture, $1,500 with one.
- Double cross headstone, 40" x 26" x 5": $1,500.
- Large headstone with picture, 48" x 26" x 5", names and dates included: $2,500.
See all options on our pricing page.
Step 3: Write the Inscription
Most memorials include:
- Full name, with a nickname if it's how people knew them
- Birth and death dates, or just the years
- A relationship line, like "Beloved husband, father and papa"
- A short verse, quote or personal phrase
Short is often stronger. Read our guides to headstone inscription ideas and memorial stone inscriptions for wording examples.
Step 4: Add Artwork and Personal Details
Artwork can tell the story of a life. Popular choices include:
- Crosses, praying hands or religious symbols
- Military emblems for veterans. See military memorial stones.
- Hobbies: fishing, tractors, hunting, gardening, music
- A photo, simplified so it stays clear outdoors
- Flowers, trees or landscapes
Keep the name and dates as the most prominent elements, with artwork supporting them.

Step 5: Think About Readability and Longevity
- High contrast. Dark-filled letters on lighter stone, or the reverse, read best over time.
- Avoid very thin fonts. They can be hard to read outdoors.
- Leave room for future names. On companion or family stones, plan space for dates to be added later.
- Durable material. Our engineered stone is made to resist cracking, fading and weather.
Step 6: Review Your Design Proof
We send a free design mockup showing exactly how the wording, artwork and layout will look. Share it with family, take your time, and request changes. Production only starts once you approve.
Step 7: Delivery and Setting
Our headstone prices include delivery and a base. For family estates, we also create family estate monuments and memorial benches. Most pieces take a few weeks from first contact to delivery.
Questions Families Often Ask Each Other
- What did they love most, and how can the stone show it?
- Would they want something traditional or something personal and unexpected?
- Where will family visit most often?
- Should we plan space for another name in the future?
It can help to gather a few photos, favorite sayings or scripture, and any hobby symbols before you contact us. We'll turn those into a design you can review together.
We serve families across Central North Carolina, including Roxboro, Yanceyville, Hillsborough, Burlington, Durham and Raleigh.
Frequently Asked Questions
How soon should I order a memorial?
There's no deadline. Many families wait several months. If a cemetery requires the ground to settle first, ask them about timing.
Can you add a name or date later?
Plan space on the stone for future additions, and contact us when you're ready.
Can you include a photo?
Yes. Our single and large headstones are available with a picture.
Do you serve families outside Prospect Hill?
Yes. We serve families across Central North Carolina, including Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Burlington and Roxboro.
